Faculty/Staff Summer Learning 2018

Welcome to Summer Reading!

Summer reading books will make their way to each division by Monday, May 21st. Faculty new to HIES will have their selected book sent to their home in early June.

All three books were selected by the summer reading committee because they address connections that give purpose and meaning to our lives. As we explore the theme of wellness together as a community for the 2018-2019 school year, we’ll use what we learn from these books as foundational information for future discussions and collaborations. I’ve also included some supplementary videos and articles related to connection, and you may want to check those out as well.

Wishing you a wonderful summer,
Heather

Brené Brown  DARING GREATLY

HIES PD Daring Greatly sm“One of the tragic ironies of modern life is that so many people feel isolated from each other by the very feelings they have in common: including a fear of failure and a sense of not being enough. Brené Brown shines a bright light into these dark recesses of human emotion and reveals how these feelings can gnaw at fulfillment in education, at work and in the home. She shows too how they can be transformed to help us live more wholehearted lives of courage, engagement and purpose… ”
—Sir Ken Robinson

Chip & Dan Heath  THE POWER OF MOMENTS

HIES PD Power of Moments sm

Chip and Dan Heath argue that our most memorable positive moments are dominated by four elements: elevation, insight, pride and connection.  If we embrace these elements, we can create more moments that matter, which Chip and Dan call “peak” moments.  Reflect on peak moments in your own lives and how you might create peak moments in your classrooms.
